After a century of waiting and bitter failures, Paris was named host city of the 2024 Olympic Games on Wednesday 13 September at the 131th session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lima, Peru. At the same time, at the end of the same voting process, Los Angeles was given the 2028 Summer Olympics.

In Paris, giant Olympic rings were unveiled Wednesday night on the esplanade of Trocadero. In a heavy rain, with the sparkling Eiffel Tower in the background, the five-by-twelve rings were illuminated by spotlights around 8 pm shortly after the IOC announcement. These included former top athletes such as Judoka Thierry Rey or swimmer Alain Bernard, as well as some sports federation leaders. Starting September 21, Emmanuel Macron and Anne Hidalgo will accompany Thomas Bach to Marseilles, which will host the sailing events in 2024.
